The Pennsylvania State Police said a Berks County couple were beaten to death with a hammer by a person who died after setting himself on fire in a garage.
The victims, 60-year-old Ira Reed Jr. and 63-year-old Joanne Deluca, were found Saturday in their home in Union Township, near Douglassville, according to state police.
DNA tests are being done to identify the person believed to be responsible, state police said. His cause of death was smoke inhalation, according to investigators.
State police said the suspect also killed the couple's pets, slashing the throats of two dogs and stomping two cats to death.
State police don't have a motive for the actions.
"It's the crazy world we live in. One of our veteran investigators said it was the worst crime scene he's ever seen," said Trooper David Beohm.
According to state police, an adult son lived in the house and no one has seen or heard from him since the killings.
